Gold Coast Aquatic Centre installs temporary grandstand for swimming championships
The installation of a temporary grandstand is among the final preparations underway in South East Queensland as the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre (GCAC) gets set to host Swimming Australia’s largest annual event from 7th to 20th April.
The 2023 Australian Age Championships and Australian Swimming Championships are anticipated to attract thousands of athletes and spectators to GCAC.
With just over a week remaining before the opening session of racing at the 2023 Australian Age Championships, the sheer scale of the event is on show as GCAC again transforms into one of Australia’s premier aquatics competition venues.
The grandstand has been bumped in to cater for the thousands of fans anticipated to travel to the coast from around the country, with more than 30,000 tickets already sold ahead of the event.
More than 2,600 athletes, from almost 400 different clubs will contest over 200 separate events in 18 sessions of racing across the nine days of competition from 7th to 15th April.
Swimming Australia Chief Executive, Eugénie Buckley, said it promised to be a true celebration of the sport and shares “The Australian Age Championships are a significant event, not only for our future Olympians and Paralympians in the water, but also their coaches, our officials and of course, the thousands of families that travel to support their children and participate in this wonderful celebration of swimming.
“It’s a true illustration of the vast footprint of swimming and the positive impact it has on so many in our broad community. It’s clear to see what this event means to our community with a 60% increase in athletes entering from last year.”
“We look forward to again witnessing people from around the country come together, united by fun and fair competition.”
The 14-day meet brings together some of Australia’s most elite Olympic and Paralympic athletes, alongside the next generation of stars, in a completely integrated program for multi-class and able bodied swimmers.
Patrons in attendance will not only be treated to quality racing from a cast of Australia’s future Olympians and Paralympians, but also a selection of local food truck options and merchandise stalls including an event specific SwimAus supporter wear range, as well as the latest from Swimming Australia’s Official Partner, Arena.
The 2023 Australian Age Championships and Australian Swimming Championships are supported by Major Events Gold Coast and the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland, and features on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar.
