Council looks to secure naming rights deal for Gold Coast Aquatic Centre

Gold Coast City Council is to look to secure a naming rights sponsor for the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre (GCAC) in an apparent aim to benefit from the venue’s exposure at the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Mayor Tom Tate said the City will seek a commercial naming rights sponsor for the $41 million venue, following full Council endorsement today.

Mayor Tate advised “the State Government has naming rights arrangements in place for all its major venues which helps offset their operating costs so this is something the City should also consider.

“The GCAC already has a naming rights arrangement with GOLDOC for the Games and there’ll be a post-Games honeymoon phase after it’s showcased on the global stage in April.

“This presents the City with a unique opportunity to secure a suitable naming rights sponsor, with the revenue generated used to underpin operating costs. Every dollar saved is a dollar saved for ratepayers.”

Mayor Tate said the GCAC represented a strong value proposition to a potential sponsor, adding “venues that regularly host events, have large numbers of patrons annually and are prominently positioned on major roads are valuable assets to corporate sponsors. With almost 10 million cars driving by on Marine Parade and 600,000 people going through its doors each year, the aquatic centre certainly fits the bill.

“A number of our other venues, such as the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, may also be suitable for naming rights arrangements.”

Editor’s note: Of Stadium Queensland's nine venues, five having naming rights deals.
