New University of Queensland SportsHub to feature sporting fields above a car park
Brisbane athletes will soon have access to even better sports facilities, with The University of Queensland’s $25 million investment in new artificial playing fields that will sit above 500 car parks set to open in mid 2016.
Being built adjacent to the UQ Centre, the St Lucia SportsHub, funded by UQ and UQ Sport, is being above a former oval and softball diamond.
UQ Sport Chief Executive Bryan Pryde explains “these two elevated fields will not only benefit the UQ community and UQ sporting clubs, but also the local community.
“The high-quality synthetic turf will be laid over shock pads to reduce injury, and field quality will always be consistent.
“The fields are more durable than grass ones, so there are no capacity issues. This means we can use the artificial fields more, and reduce the impact on our grass fields, improving sports facilities across campus.”
UQ Property and Facilities Deputy Director Geoff Dennis said the project included sustainability initiatives like rain water harvesting, electric car charging, and secure bike storage facilities.
Dennis added “UQ promotes and encourages sustainable transport options to University to support a healthy lifestyle and protect the environment.
“This new facility will include a Bike Box with space for 200 bicycles, and is conveniently near the Green Bridge, making it even easier for commuters to ride to work.”
Beneath the sports fields the project will include 500 new parking spaces
The $25 million project is being funded by increases in UQ parking fees. Previously, UQ parking fees had not risen since 2010.
