New Sydney trams to enhance SCG and Allianz Stadium event experience
Spectators attending matches and concerts at the Sydney Cricket Ground and Allianz Stadium will benefit from the light rail service linking Sydney's Central Station with Moore Park.
Announced by the NSW Government as part of its long-awaited 20 year transport masterplan for the state, the plan commits the Government to start construction on a light rail line from Central to Randwick in 2014, with an extension through George Street and the city centre to Circular Quay after that.
The line will run along Anzac Parade, adjacent to the University of NSW, Randwick Racecourse and the Sydney Cricket Ground.
SCG Trust Chief Executive Jamie Barkley said spectators attending the SCG and Allianz Stadium will be among the big winners of the light rail project.
Barkley stated "our grounds attract approximately 1.5 million visitors each year and light rail will allow spectators attending our grounds to arrive and depart the Moore Park precinct quickly, safely and efficiently and in greater comfort.
"Moore Park has been the centre of Sydney's sport and entertainment precinct for over 150 years, and light rail is another important piece of infrastructure for spectators to make their event day experience even better.
"With our new Northern Stand under construction at the SCG,together with our visionary Master Plan for the precinct, patrons will be able to enjoy the best sports, entertainment and recreational precinct within minutes of Sydney's CBD.
"Light rail and our Master Plan are key components towards the Moore Park precinct being transformed to rival other great sporting parklands throughout the world."
Light rail is another piece of important infrastructure which puts Sydney's travel needs first.
Barkley concluded "light rail will also benefit Moore Park precinct residents as it will reduce traffic and noise and will allow them easier access to and from their homes in peak periods.
"Everyone will be a winner."
