New Karumba Swimming Pool opens in Carpentaria Shire

A Gulf of Carpentaria Mayor says the opening of a long-awaited swimming pool and aquatic playground in Karumba is a huge step for the local community.

Carpentaria Shire Council has spent the past year, and $3.4 million, building the facility, which was officially opened last week.

With half the cost met by the Queensland Government’s Royalties for the Regions program, the Shire has been able to develop a facility that feature a 25 metre pool, a children’s wading pool and play area and barbecue area built in the small Gulf town.

Carpentaria Mayor Fred Pascoe has welcomed the opening, stating it is “a fairly significant piece of infrastructure.”

He added that the facility had been a long time coming, explaining "Karumba was established in the 1940-1950s (and) over those years people have had to rely on private pools (or) a 10-metre pool which is actually in the Karumba State School.”

While the population of Karumba numbers less than 7,000, more than 100,000 visitors tour the Gulf each year, and the new pool is expected to attract more tourists to the town.
