New training helps Queensland lifeguards and pool managers harness AI to keep swimmers safe

Aquatic professionals across Queensland now have access to a free, cutting-edge online training module to help them understand, implement, and work confidently with drowning detection systems (DDS), including those powered by artificial intelligence and smart watches.

A new micro-credential, Training in Drowning Detection Systems, equips lifeguards, swim teachers, duty managers, and facility operators with practical skills and knowledge to integrate DDS into their supervision and safety practices. Participants gain insights into how these systems can support vigilance, strengthen emergency response, and complement traditional lifeguard scanning, while also understanding the operational, legal, and compliance considerations of adopting the technology.

Introducing the training, Royal Life Saving Queensland Chief Executive, Paul Barry stated “drowning detection systems can be a powerful tool in a facility’s approach to drowning prevention, but they must be implemented thoughtfully.

“This course is designed to give aquatic staff the confidence and capability to integrate emerging technology effectively alongside traditional lifeguard supervision.”

Developed by Royal Life Saving Queensland with support from the Queensland Government’s Queensland Workforce Strategy 2022–2032, the free 70-minute self-paced online module is open for enrolments.

The Training in Drowning Detection Systems micro-credential has garnered strong support from aquatic industry leaders. \

Emphasising the importance of equipping staff to work effectively with new technologies, Belgravia Group Manager - Health & Safety, Scott Vanderheyden stated “lifesaving technology is only as effective as the people who use it.

“Providing lifeguards and support staff with the appropriate knowledge, skills and training to effectively implement these innovations is critical to ensuring they deliver on their potential to enhance safety.”

Dan Mulvey, General Manager – Australia and New Zealand for AI-powered drowning detection system Lynxight, emphasised the importance of training in realising the full potential of this technology, noting “AI-powered drowning detection systems are transforming aquatic safety by providing lifeguards with real-time alerts and comprehensive monitoring capabilities.

“This training ensures that aquatic professionals are equipped to effectively integrate these systems into their operations, enhancing their ability to prevent incidents and respond swiftly when necessary.”

The training is designed for busy professionals, using podcast-style interviews, immersive 360° video, and interactive content to bring real-world scenarios to life. Graduates also receive a Royal Life Saving Queensland digital badge recognising their skills.

Explaining that the module is practical and accessible to staff at all levels, Royal Life Saving Queensland State Manager, Nikki Thornhill went on to say “we’ve made sure it’s relevant whether your facility already has a DDS installed, or you’re just starting to explore the technology.

“It’s about making sure teams are prepared, procedures are updated, and everyone knows how to use these systems to improve swimmer safety.”

To encourage early participation, anyone who completes the module by 31st July 2025 will go into the draw for prizes, including free enrolments in Royal Life Saving Queensland face-to-face training courses and $100 eGift cards for regional participants.
