New Profloor portable flooring protects turf at AAMI Park concerts

Specialist flooring manufacturer Profloors’ new Pro-Floor GP product achieved outstanding results when trialled at a recent major concert event.

The trial was independently conducted by AGCSATech over four days at Melbourne’s AAMI Park for a two show performance by Bruce Springsteen in February 2014.

Hot weather leading up to the event, and warm weather during the trial period, meant that that the turfgrass at the venue was subjected to significant stress.

Four types of portable flooring products from Profloor were utilised to cover almost the entire playing surface of AAMI Park to evaluate their impact on the quality of turfgrass when used as protective turf covering.

The protection products utilised were grey coloured Pro-Floor EF, green coloured Pro-Floor EF, translucent grass protection flooring (Pro-Floor GP) and Pro-Track.

Profloor Managing Director Paul Blackie says the trial established that the new Pro-Floor GP product allows more light penetration than industry standard products used in the past, including Profloors’ own products.

Blackie explained “when compared with standard cover products, Pro-Floor GP demonstrated its ability to provide a remarkable difference in grass condition after being in place for four to five days and trafficked by thousands of people at a rock concert in the middle of a hot summer.

“Prior to the turfgrass protection products being laid, the turfgrass quality over the entire outfield was assessed for its colour and density. Colour was rated at eight out of 10 when visually inspected at six locations over the playing surface while density was measured at 8.5 when assessed at the same six locations.

“The Pro-Floor EF Green and EF Grey as well as the translucent Pro-Floor GP were removed after having been down on the playing surface for almost 6 days, including the time taken to install and remove.

“The turfgrass that was under the Pro-Floor GP was completely unaffected after the removal of the product. It still had a colour rating of eight out of 10 and its density rating had remained at 8.5 out of 10.

“In comparison, the turfgrass under the Pro-Floor EF products was equally affected by a loss of colour when compared to that which had been under the GP product. The turfgrass colour was rated as 6.5 out of 10 while density was slightly less at 8 out of 10.

“Turfgrass underneath the Pro-Track was colour rated at four out of 10 and a density rating of 6.5 out of 10.”

Blackie says that while the Pro-Floor GP product was undoubtedly a standout performer in protecting the grass during the Bruce Springsteen concert, it must also be remembered that the other two products, Pro-Floor EF and Pro-Track, still provided a high level of turf protection and delivered a significantly better outcome than if no protection was provided at all.

Profloor products are available for hire whereby the client picks up the portable flooring, installs it, and brings it back for cleaning. A turnkey service is also available where Profloor will deliver, install, manage, remove and clean for a simple square metre rate. Alternatively, for those with ongoing requirements, a preferable solution may be to purchase the required product from Profloor.
