New aquatic playground now open at Charters Towers
A new aquatic play facility that incorporates a splash pad with tipping bucket, water slides and various water jets and spray hoops, all under cover of giant shade sails has been opened in the town of Charters Towers In regional North Queensland.
Officially opened on Saturday 18th February, Charters Towers Regional Councillor Kate Hastie said the facility is a significant local and regional attraction which will hopefully be enjoyed for generations to come.
Councillor Hastie advised “it has been exciting watching the space come together and everyone has been watching intently, waiting for the day everything was complete.
“To say the finished facility looks absolutely fantastic is not an understatement and I am really excited to see the community come together to celebrate it’s opening.
“The space will no doubt prove popular with families, both locals and visitors, to utilise and keep children entertained and cool during the warmer months."
Despite various delays, which included removal of unsuitable material and contaminated soil, inclement weather, and labour and material shortages, the completion of this project ultimately went to plan.
Also included in the space are picnic shelters, barbeques, an amenities block, pathways, lighting, and landscaping, all contained within a fenced area.
Also welcoming the facility opening, Queensland’s Assistant Minister for Local Government, Nikki Boyd noted “there’s a lot to love about regional Queensland, and the community in Charters Towers boasts one of the best lifestyles in Queensland.
Boyd noted “there’s a lot to love about regional Queensland, and the community in Charters Towers boasts one of the best lifestyles in Queensland.
“By investing in the new water park we’re making that lifestyle even better, building a facility which will bring families and the community together.
“It’s also going to make a splash with tourists, who will support local businesses and jobs when they visit.”
Including Splashtacular water features and a 270 metre² safety surface from Life Floor, the aquatic play facility was installed by TP Aquatic Constructions with support from Mauer Construction Tiling
Life Floor safety surfacing was specified in 10mm Thickness, Ripple 2.0 Texture for the large waterplay area in five colours.
This unique design features custom cut circles that visually transition between areas. An additional impact attenuating layer of Life Floor is disguised surrounding the elevated play structure perimeter to improve safety and reduce the injury risk should a child fall.
The Charters Towers Water project was jointly funded by the Australian Government and Queensland Government.
Federal Government funding of $1.4 million was provided through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program.
