New $52 million aquatic and recreation facility opens in Mount Barker

By Nigel Benton

Aiming to support activity and wellbeing in its local community in the Adelaide Hills, the new Summit Aquatic and Leisure Centre has opened in Mount Barker.

Opened at the weekend, the $52 million facility is the largest ever infrastructure project undertaken by the Mount Barker District Council.

It was made possible by collaborative funding across all levels, involving a $15 million contribution from the Australian Government through the Community Development Grant scheme and an additional $7.3 million from the South Australia Government’s Local Government Infrastructure Partnership Program.

It offers a wide range of facilities designed including a 25-metre indoor pool, a dedicated learn-to-swim pool and a warm water program pool, along with a splash play area for children, a gym and group fitness spaces, community meeting rooms and a cafe.

Environmental sustainability has been central to the Centre’s design with features like rooftop solar panels, water reuse systems, and all-electric heat pumps, placing it among the most advanced aquatic centres in regional Australia.

Accessibility has also been a key focus in the development of the facility. All pools are equipped with accessibility ramps, while wide concourses and multiple disabled change areas make sure for ease of use for all its visitors. As part of the Accessible Australia initiative, there is also a designated Changing Places changeroom located in the warm water therapy pool hall.

The Centre has opened its doors to the public to high demand, with memberships already surpassing initial expectations. Local government representatives and federal members expressed great pride and optimism about the centre’s role in the community.

Speaking while inaugurating the Centre, South Australian Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing, Emily Bourke advised “our government recognises the growth of the Adelaide Hills region and is supporting the infrastructure and facilities needed for the community.

“This partnership continues to transform the precinct and has delivered a regional aquatic centre for current and future generations.

“A purpose-built centre, equipped with modern and inclusive features, enables South Australians of all ages and abilities to come together and lead healthy and active lives.”
