Four architects shortlisted to design the new North Queensland Stadium

Four architectural practices have been shortlisted to develop a concept design and site master plan for the $250 million North Queensland Stadium.

BVN Architecture, Cox Architecture, Hassell and Populous were shortlisted and will now tender for the principal consultant role for the building of the centrally located 25,000 seat regional stadium that will replace the 1300SMILES Stadium as the home to the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys NRL team.

With the successful design tenderer expected to be appointed by the end of the year, the appointed team will then further develop their concept design, in preparation for release of the managing contractor tender in early 2017.

The North Queensland Stadium is to be built within the Townsville City Waterfront Priority Development Area adjacent to the Townsville Central Business District, between Ross Creek and Saunders Street.

A total of 20 locally based Townsville companies were included across the four shortlisted design team submissions as part of their local industry participation strategies.

The Queensland Government has committed $140 million to support the development of the stadium while the Federal Government has pledged $100 million, through its Smart Cities Plan.

The (NRL) have also pledged an upfront payment of $10 million and the Townsville City Council is contributing the land that the Stadium will be built on.

The Queensland Department of State Development, which is leading the plan, aims to have the Stadium completed in time for the start of the 2020 NRL Season.

The latest Stadiums Queensland Annual Report shows that total patronage at the 1300SMILES Stadium was 262,170 in 2015/16, up from 223,479 in 2014/15.
