AIRC Releases Fitness Industry Award
The Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) has released the 'modern award' for the fitness industry.
The award covers fitness centres; fitness services or classes; group fitness organisations; weight loss/control centres; aquatic centres; aquatic services or classes; indoor sports centres; golf driving ranges; dance centres; martial arts centres; and recreation camps.
Leisure industry operators not covered by the Fitness Industry Award are mostly covered Broadcasting and Recorded Entertainment Award 2010, The Travelling Show Award 2010 and the Alpine Resort Award 2010.
As of 1st January 2010, employers will be expected to begin operating under the modern award system wherein thousands of awards have been reduced to around 130 national awards for specific industries or occupations. Reaching these âmodernâ awards has been an enormous undertaking and now the award provisions have to be applied.
The New Year also sees the implementation of national employment standards, the last part of the Fair Work Act 2009. National employment standards are new core standards that underpin the terms of any modern award and enterprise agreement. They are a set of extensive employee rights that include the new right to request a change in working conditions for employees returning from a period of parental leave and generous redundancy payments for all national system employees.
