Architects chosen for new Queensland State Netball Centre

Brisbane-based architectural firm BVN has been announced as the project architects for the new State Netball Centre in Brisbane.

The Queensland Government is providing $30 million to develop the new facility at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre at Nathan in order to provide a home base for netball that will help netball players and teams at all levels.

Announcing the selection of BVN, Queensland Treasurer and Minister for Sport, Curtis Pitt stated “netball is a popular and growing sport and successes like those achieved by the Queensland Firebirds have no doubt inspired many to either actively take up the sport or become fans and support our state team.

“Demand for space for training and games is high and once completed we expect the State Netball Centre to be used by thousands of young netballers from clubs, schools and junior development programs, as well as seniors and representative players.”

BVN was recently appointed to the project following a design tender for the brand new eight court indoor facility, training centre and administration offices for Netball Queensland.

BVN has commenced detailed design drawings which will allow the project team to seek tenders to construct the facility. On-site works were expected to start later this year and be completed by late 2017.

Netball Queensland Chief Executive Catherine Clark, said the sport was excited to have achieved a significant milestone in the development of its home of netball.

Clark commented “the Government announcement in June was a watershed moment for netball in Queensland and its support has provided us with an amazing opportunity to be able to grow and expand the sport at all levels.

”Our job is to help women and girls achieve their potential. The realisation of this venue will facilitate our ability to increase that positive impact.

“For our community to be able to have a place to call home and for young fans and players to be able to train and participate alongside their Firebirds heroes will be a very proud and memorable day in the history of our sport.”

BVN Principal, Mark Grimmer said it was exciting for the firm to be designing a significant new sporting facility for Queensland, adding “we hope the result is one that the Queensland netball community will be proud to call home.”

BVN Associate Paolo Frigenti explained that “our design (provides) an elevated level for spectators to view the games creating vibrant atmosphere.

“The sloping site, large clear spans for the courts and the need for a broad range of support facilities made this a challenging design process."
