Fitness Cartel lodges plans for Mackay gym

Fitness Cartel has lodged plans to develop a new two-storey gym in the Queensland city of Mackay.

The company last week submitted an application to Mackay Regional Council to convert Tenancy 4 at 8-10 Windmill Crossing in Mount Pleasant, currently home to Rebel Sports, into a fitness facility.

As reported by Mackay news website The Chronicle, if approved, the ground floor will feature a comfort zone, cardio zone, free weights and general gym area, group studio, cycle studio, creche, kitchenette, male and female bathrooms with showers, a wellness area, hot rock sauna, two massage rooms, spa, magnesium pool, and two pools at six and 12 degrees celsius.

A mezzanine floor will feature a Pilates studio, general cardio and treadmill zone, members lounge area and a person trainer meeting room.

Documents state the gym will operate 24/7, emphasising that as its peak demand times will be early mornings and late afternoons, it should not negatively impact on the 352 available carparking spaces which neighbouring tenancies require for their customers during the day.

Documents accompanying the plans advise “the proposal will not alter the existing building appearance except for signage and will maintain a positive contribution to the streetscape.”

Last month development approval was given to demolish the Salt Health Club and the Australian Crawl Swim School in the Brisbane suburb of Tingalpa, to build a new state-of-the-art gym to be managed by Fitness Cartel.

Approval was given to TCF Properties’ application to build a 1655 metre² Fitness Cartel gym that will feature five activity rooms with a rooftop deck, including a group fitness studio, separate gender-based amenities, Pilates studio, cardio deck and comfort zone.

South East Queensland based Nathan James - a former co-owner of World Gym Australia, Genesis Fitness Clubs and Australian Sports Nutrition stores - is the Director and owner of Fitness Cartel Mackay, a subsidiary company of Fitness Cartel Health Clubs.

The Fitness Cartel Health Clubs website advise that “Nathan has also owned and assisted in over 30 fitness related businesses plus many other ventures, with his last three fitness clubs profiting over $1m per annum.”

It goes on to advise that Fitness Cartel aims to open 60 gyms by 2029 with multiple locations “already locked in” including in Logan, Brisbane and New Zealand.
