Doggett Heads Tourism Award Winners

Peter Doggett has been presented with a Life Membership by the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC).
The award, made at the Gala Dinner at ATEC's inbound tourism conference in Hobart last week, acknowledged Doggettâs role in developing the billion-dollar South-East Asian inbound tourism market for Australia.
Doggett, who has spent more than three decades developing the Gold Coast as one of Australia's pre-eminent tourist destinations, was presented with his award by ATEC Vice-Chair Anna Guillan in front of nearly 500 friends, peers and colleagues at Hobart's Wrest Point Casino.
ATEC Managing Director Matt Hingerty said the award is fitting recognition for Peterâs efforts in establishing a sustainable inbound tourism industry for Australia, stating âPeter is an icon to all those who work in tourism.
"He played a fundamental role in establishing Australia's modern inbound tourism industry, which brings in $26 billion from overseas every year.
"This ATEC Life Membership is one small way the industry can say 'Thank you, Peter'. One of Peter's lasting legacies has been his campaign to drive dodgy tourism operators out of the market.
"The fact that the ADS scheme has been successful is in no small way due to Peter's persistence in driving both the Australian and Chinese Governments to commit to it."
Apart from being one of ATEC's longest-serving members, Doggett has given countless hours of his time on many other tourism boards and committees during his career. These included Director of Gold Coast Tourism, on Bond University's HRTM Regional Advisory Board, on the ATEC Board and as ATEC Chairman.
Doggett was also awarded ATEC's Outstanding Contribution to Industry Award in 1989.
Peter worked for Warner Village Theme Parks for 33 years, rising to become the organisationâs international sales and marketing chief. He is now the principal for international marketing consultancy In2Tourism.
ATEC presented two other awards on the evening; Tourism NT International Markets Co-ordinator Julieta Lopez was presented with the 2010 Len Taylor Young ATEC Award for Excellence, while Sandra Swan of the Dockside Group was given the ATEC 2010 Outstanding Individual Contribution to the Industry.
ATEC also presented a cheque for $2559.30 to the Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal Committee, the proceeds of a $1,500 ATEC donation plus additional gold-coin donations by ATEC members during the conference.
