Disabled Wintersport Australia opens new hub at Falls Creek

Expanding access opportunities in the Alpine Region, Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA) has opened a new dedicated hub in the Falls Creek Alpine Resort, opened at the end June.

Situated in Falls Creek's Slalom Plaza in the heart of the village, the facility will not only serve as a central meeting point for DWA members and volunteers but also significantly enhance the organisation's visibility within the resort.

As a national organisation, DWA takes responsibility for the development of disability winter sports throughout Australia. Guided by their mission to promote and foster the participation of individuals with disabilities in winter sport, DWA is actively engaged in Falls Creek.

Visitors to the resort will often spot DWA members and guides on the slopes, enjoying the winter sports experience.

Welcoming the opening, DWA President, Melinda Brown stated “DWA is delighted to be opening our new on-snow home at Falls Creek.

“Accessibility for people with disability is a key barrier to participation in snow sports and this facility will be a significant asset in providing support for our members and their families into the future.

“Our tremendous thanks goes to Falls Creek Alpine Resort for their generosity and assistance in making this happen.”

While alpine resorts are generally not recognised for their accessibility, Falls Creek Alpine Resort is determined to break new ground and establish a higher standard for inclusivity.

Having, in October 2022, received a $180,000 grant from the Victorian Government as part of the ‘Changing Places’ Funding Round, Falls Creek Alpine Resort used the grant towards the installation of one of the 19 Changing Places bathrooms planned for public spaces across Victoria.

Changing Places bathrooms go beyond the conventional accessibility features, offering height-adjustable, adult-sized changing tables, a ceiling hoist system, grab rails, and ample space to accommodate two or more carers. These state-of-the-art facilities are purpose-built to empower individuals with high support needs to use bathrooms safely and with dignity.

With over 325,000 Victorians relying on these facilities when visiting popular destinations, resorts, and events, Falls Creek Alpine Resort is making commendable progress in meeting their accessibility requirements.

Situated at the Rocky Valley foreshore within the new lakeside development site, this facility will be the first of its kind in any public space within Australian alpine resorts. Its establishment will significantly enhance accessibility opportunities in Falls Creek, benefitting individuals with specific mobility needs.

The new development will serve as an exceptional addition to the resort, fostering a vibrant hub for summer and winter activities including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, biking and watersports.
