City of Perth Rangers launch bike patrols

City of Perth Rangers will now be able to react quicker to incidents and broaden their coverage of the city, with the addition of bicycles to their fleet.

Trained by Western Australian Police Officers, four Rangers have begun patrolling the central business district on two-wheels, in addition to regular walking and vehicle patrols.

Gaye McMath, Deputy Chair of Commissioner for the City of Perth, said Rangers have undertaken an intensive training course, which has seen them learn how to safely descend stairs and kerbing, and incorporate rapid stopping and evasive techniques.

She advised “utilising bicycles gives Rangers a greater ability to cover distance, and when needed, respond rapidly to incidents that may be affecting the public.

“The bikes are also fitted with first aid kits and a sharps disposal unit.

“It all adds to the City’s ability to keep people safe and forms part of a wider network including CCTV, Wi-Fi, body cameras, radio communications and direct access to Police.”
