Australian Government to help develop sport and fitness education in India

The Australian Government is backing a partnership that will encourage the development of sports and fitness vocational courses in India.

Last month the Federal Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Robb signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sport Education Development Australia (SEDA) and IL&FS Education & Technology Services Limited, to develop the skills of Indian students in various sports and fitness programs.

The agreement followed Indian Prime Minister’s Narendra Modi recent visit to Australia, where he spoke about Australia being a great sporting nation and urged the country to lend some of its expertise to India to develop sports and fitness education.

Commenting on the partnership, Minister Robb stated "I hope this Memorandum of Understanding can use Australian expertise to extend help to young people in India to get better training in various sports and management skills, and make careers out of it.

“Given the exponential growth in sport in India, there is a need for specialised training in every field including gym management, sports event management, sports media.”

Minister Robb said that Australia is well place to help the Indian government address these requirements, adding "this partnership will be a powerful example of how Australian expertise in sports training and management could play a big role in the booming Indian sports market.”

Service Skills Australia has been managing the SIS10 Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package for 10 years and is currently in the process of reviewing the training package to ensure it continues to meet the contemporary needs of the industry’s workforce.
