Age-friendly outdoor fitness equipment installed in Eltham
Nillumbik Shire Council has partnered with the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) to create age-friendly outdoor spaces in which fitness equipment has been installed specifically designed for older people to use and enjoy.
The new equipment has been installed at Andrew Pocket Park in the outer Melbourne suburb of Eltham, with community volunteers soon being trained on how to best use it.
The program, funded through the Australian Government, will involve different stages rolling out over the coming months, including looking for ‘champions’ and Training the Trainer, before officially opening to the public in July.
The volunteers, or ‘champions’ will meet at the park every week and be on hand to advise older people on using the equipment.
Nillumbik Mayor Ben Ramcharan notes “keeping fit as you get older has a range of benefits for both physical and mental health. This park, dedicated to the wellbeing of our older people in Nillumbik, is the perfect place to come along and put your health first.
“If you are one of our older residents, come down to the park and have a go on the equipment. You’ll meet likeminded people and have friendly help on hand.”
