World Urban Parks launches new Award for Large Urban Parks
World Urban Parks is inviting parks from around the world to apply for its new International Large Urban Parks Award.
Aiming to emphasise the value of large urban parks as well as recognising excellence in their management, the Awards, to be judged by a jury panel according to a set of criteria, will present three grades of the Award: Bronze, Silver, and Gold.
Explaining the rationale behind the Awards, a World Urban Parks statement advises “large urban parks are very different. Some are well-groomed parks in the midst of a city, others are landscape parks on the periphery of a city. Some may contain deep forests, others agricultural areas.
“Some may be old, filled with historic heritage, others newly created. Climate differs and offers various types of nature (while) usage differs from heavily populated to sparsely visited green spaces.”
All kinds of large urban parks are welcome to apply for an Award, with the Awards to be presented at ceremonies in connection with World Urban Parks Congress or regional conferences.
One such conference is the 2018 World Urban Parks Congress held in Melbourne, Australia from 14th to 17th October.
Entries for the Awards must be submitted by 14th May and will be announced on 30th June.
World Urban Parks has also announced that it will host World Parks Week, from 28th to 6th May, in celebration of parks and green spaces.
The week is organised to:
• Communicate the critical importance of parks in a global context
• Promote best practice by learning from other parks services
• Encourage people to enjoy their local park and appreciate the importance of green space
