World Urban Parks body to launch in April
The International Federation of Park and Recreation Administration (IFPRA) has agreed the transition of the organisation into a new global body - World Urban Parks.
Following a initial independent review, over the past year an international Task Force of urban park sector representatives had developed the concept for the new body, with IFPRA members formally and overwhelmingly voting to approve the transition just prior to Christmas.
The Task Force was chaired by consultant and former Parks Victoria executive John Senior.
The Task Force advanced the notion that having a credible global body to advocate for urban parks, share knowledge and best practice, commission international research, and facilitate professional development will provide both organisations and industry professionals with wider opportunities.
Establishment of the new body will come in the wake of the Parks Forum, the peak body representing major park management agencies in Australia and New Zealand, ceasing operations in the last quarter of 2014.
Currently an international Implementation Group is being formed to undertake a number of key final decisions through February and March in order to bring World Urban Parks into being, prior to the body’s planned launch on 1st April.
As a result of the change, IFPRA's upcoming World Congress in Portugal, being held along with the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Parks and Public Gardens (PARJAP Portugal 2015), is being rebranced as the World Urban Parks Congress 2015.
The event is being held at Ponte de Lima Portugal, from 26th to 30th May 2015.
