Work commences on Port Hedland Sports and Community Hub development
Stage one of the Port Hedland Sports and Community Hub has commenced, following an official event last week attended by Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman.
Stage one works represent a $19.4 million investment and include the construction of the Port Hedland Community Centre and stables refurbishment, horse float parking and landscaping. Decmil was awarded the construction contract to complete the works.
Funding for stage one works has been made possible by a $10m commitment from the Western Australian Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries.
Advising that the new facility would be a fantastic asset for the local community, giving young and old a state-of-the-art venue in which to recreate, Minister Templeman stated “I look forward to seeing the new facility take shape and provide people with a space to exercise, socialise and congregate.”
Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the commencement of the project as an exciting milestone in delivering the Hedland Recreation Hubs, which also include the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub and South Hedland Integrated Sports Hub.
Mayor Carter explained “this is stage one of a five-stage project. The Port Hedland Community Centre will replace the existing Turf Club building with a modern, multi-functional facility. The new facility will provide more martial arts and dance hire space. It will play host to corporate and community functions while also catering for up to 200 people in a community welfare emergency. Stage one will also include refurbished stables and access road/horse-float parking.
"Council is proud to be delivering on the community's sentiment supporting upgrades in Hedland's sporting and recreational amenity for the future."
