Million dollar new facility for Port Hedland Netball Association

Port Hedland’s main netball facility is about to receive a $1.6 million facelift thanks to funding from the Pilbara Development Commission, BHP Billiton and the Town of Port Hedland.

The Faye Gladstone Netball Courts, home to the Port Hedland Netball Association will have a new pavilion to replace the existing storage shed and kiosk.

Mayor Camilo Blanco said Council was happy to be able to partner with the Pilbara Development Commission and BHP Billiton to provide the association with new facilities with mining giant contributing $1,545,433 and the Commission $170,000 for the new multi-purpose facility.

Mayor Blanco stated “the Port Hedland Netball Association played a key leadership role in securing the commitments and funding for the project, and have demonstrated what can be achieved with collaboration with government and industry.”

BHP Billiton Pilbara Communities Manager Chris Cottier added “we are proud to be contributing $1.54 million towards the construction of the Port Hedland Netball Association’s new Clubhouse. BHP Billiton is committed to supporting local projects to encourage the people of Port Hedland to get involved, engaged and active within our community.”

Pilbara Development Commission Chief Executive Officer Terry Hill addedd the Commission was pleased to support the project through the State Government’s Regional Grants Scheme, commenting “the Port Hedland Netball Association has really championed this project and it’s great to see it progressing full steam ahead.

“The association has over 400 members making it the largest sporting body in Port Hedland. The completion of this upgrade will have significant benefits for the players, spectators and the wider community.”

Mayor Blanco said sport was an important part of the community and Hedland has nurtured some outstanding internationally-recognised athletes, concluding “the Town hopes this new pavilion will help the Port Hedland Netball Association grow in numbers and inspire our up-and-coming future netball stars.”

The new pavilion include office space, a kiosk, a first aid room, multi-purpose room, toilets and showers and storage space.

Council awarded the tender for the Faye Gladstone Netball Pavilion construction to Emirge for the value of $1,539,664.50.

The facility is expected to be completed in September.
