Woorangalook Victorian Koori Surfing Titles celebrate 27 Years of Surfing
The Woorrangalook Victorian Koori Surf Titles were held over the weekend celebrating 27 years of surfing, community and culture.
The Woorrangalook Victorian Koori Surf Titles is presented by VicHealth, Victorian Government and Play It Safe by the Water and Supported by Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, CFMEU, Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative, Strong Brother Strong Sister, DHELK DJ, Cancer Council Australia, Vitality Brands, Head Sox, Cotton On, Indigi Print and Yeti.
The Titles were held at Pt Roadknight, Anglesea with more than 140 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from across the state gathering to celebrate the annual event which brings together communities in a fun weekend of surfing and culture.
The event saw representation from Geelong, Bellarine Peninsula, Surf Coast, Phillip Island, Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton Yarra Valley, Metropolitan Melbourne, East Gippsland, Swan Hill, Warrnambool, Portland and Hamilton.
Opened on Saturday by Wadawurrung Traditional Owner Corrina Eccles the event was cleansed with a traditional smoking and mixing of the water’s ceremony.
Competition followed and participants were greeted with clean conditions in the more protected area of Pt Roadknight beach, with the assistance of surf coaches and volunteers in the water.
Delilah Chisolm (Torquay) was crowned Open Women’s Champion, Jordie Campbell (Sandy Point) Open Men’s Champion, Ange King (Torquay) Over 35 Women’s, Corrina Eccles (Torquay) Over 45 Women’s, Rhys Collins (Pt Leo) took out the Over 35 and Over 45 Men’s divisions.
Open Men’s and Women’s Champions receive the additional honour of representing the Victorian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community after gaining a gaining a wildcard into the 2025 Rip Curl Pro Trials at Bells Beach.
Jordie Campbell, Open Men’s Champion shared “this weekend is always my favourite of the year, and for me it’s more about connecting with communities from all over Victoria and spending the day sharing the ocean with friends and family. There is nothing better than seeing kids catching their first waves and seeing the smiles on their faces.”
The Strong Brother, Strong Sister and DHELK DJA Encouragement Awards of a surfboard were presented to Seth Monican (Portland) and Ella Jones (Yarra Valley).
