URBNSURF Sydney partners with Surfing NSW to enhance surfing experience and provide safety skills
URBNSURF Sydney has announced its new partnership with Surfing New South Wales, aimed at supporting and enhancing the surfing experience in NSW. Surfing NSW and URBNSURF Sydney also look forward to rolling out the Surfers Rescue Program at the new facility and providing new skills to the Western Sydney community.
URBNSURF Sydney, located within Sydney Olympic Park in Western Sydney, aims to accelerate the way individuals learn to surf, promoting inclusivity, providing access to ocean-like waves to the Western Sydney community and expanding participation in the popular sport.
A component of the partnership will be the support of Surfing NSW’s High-Performance program, under the leadership of former world-tour and top-10 professional, Nathan Webster. With added support from NSWIS, Surfing NSW will have access to a range of waves designed to accelerate athlete development, with a particular emphasis on aerial surfing.
Lucas Townsend, Chief Executive of Surfing NSW enthused "this partnership with URBNSURF Sydney is a momentous occasion for surfing in New South Wales.
“Together, we aim to not only enhance the experience for seasoned surfers but also introduce more individuals to the joy and health benefits of surfing. This is a game-changing amenity that enables anyone, of any skill, any background, and any hometown to try surfing for the first time in a controlled, safe and purely fun environment.
“Surfing NSW is committed to sharing our wealth of knowledge and coaching techniques with the URBNSURF team, ensuring that surfers of all levels can enjoy the sport.”
Recent research conducted by Griffith University highlights the immense economic impact of surfing, contributing approximately US$1 trillion annually to the global economy by enhancing the mental health of surfers. The partnership between Surfing NSW and URBNSURF will support both organisations commitment to building better communities through surfing.
URBNSURF Chief Executive Damon Tudor shared "we're excited about URBNSURF Sydney's opening and adding the already incredible positive impact surfing has on the state. URBNSURF Sydney isn't just about surfing; it's about fostering a sense of inclusivity and adventure for people of all backgrounds. We are excited about the great opportunities that this project will bring to the community.”
Surfing NSW's commitment to surf safety is further demonstrated through ongoing programs like Surfers Rescue 24/7. With over 63% of NSW surfers having saved a life in the ocean, Surfing NSW's surf safety initiatives continue to educate and empower the surfing community. Surfing NSW and URBNSURF Sydney look forward to rolling out the Surfers Rescue Program at the new facility and providing new skills to the Western Sydney community.
Surfers Rescue 24/7 is a free board rescue and CPR course available for all surfers and recreational water users in NSW. The course provides crucial training to assist in an emergency situation and could save a life.
