Autumn 2024 opening date announced for URBNSURF Sydney
The team behind URBNSURF Sydney has announced that they are on target for the new attraction to open in the autumn of 2024.
With the pandemic having caused a series of setback to the project, construction is currently underway on the $50 million development at Sydney Olympic Park.
Set to be Australia’s second wave generated park - after URBNSURF Melbourne - the attraction will provide perfect waves for in excess of 1000 people through the gates every day for a surf session, and countless more as spectators or to enjoy other amenities available on site.
Sydney surfers can expect a diamond-shaped lagoon using Wavegarden technology to generate waves up to two metres in height. With LED lighting illuminating the artificial waves will also be available for use after dark.
Once operational, URBNSURF Sydney will include a massive event space next to the lagoon, which can host 2000 people for live events including music, unique sporting events and corporate activities.
Set on a 3.2 hectare site, other amenities will include a surf academy, cabanas for private use, a 20 metre leisure pool and 8 metre childrens pool, playground, surf-skate pad, retail store, a high-performance centre, a multifunction room and a health and wellness studio.
URBNSURF Sydney has also advised that NSW-based catering and hospitality firm Applejack, has been put in charge of the culinary offerings at the attraction.
Applejack owns and operates eight venues across Sydney, including Forrester's, The Butler, RAFI and Bopp & Tone. The team will be bringing the same produce- and service-driven approach found at its venues to the attraction’s premium restaurant with a rooftop terrace, waterfront cafe and takeaway kiosk.
Applejack joins the URBNSURF family alongside farm-to-table favourites Three Blue Ducks, who provide the food and drink offerings down in Melbourne.
Advising that he is excited to use what the company had learned in Melbourne to bring a new inclusive way to surf to Sydney, URBNSURF Chief Executive, Damon Tudor stated “as a Sydneysider, we are blessed with a stunning coastline of surf beaches, but access to those beaches and crowding in the lineup is becoming an increasing issue."
“When we first wanted to launch a wave park here in Australia, we wanted to launch one from the start here in Sydney’s West. To see that dream and vision come to life is really exciting. We can’t wait to provide everyone with the best waves and the most inclusive surf session they can imagine whether it be your first time on a board or as an experienced surfer.”
“Our key goal is to ensure that everyone who walks through the gates has the best experience we can offer them in the safest possible way. And that’s why we’ve been meticulous throughout the construction to ensure that all our protocols or key criteria which is part of the URBNSURF DNA are met before we open.”
“What we’re building here is not only an awesome place for anyone to come and get awesome stoke during their surf session, but a venue that has something for everyone. This site will be a multi-use precinct, which has the capability for visitors and guests to enjoy food at any time in the day, use one of our working spaces for personal or group use, to come and see a live music event. The options are endless.”
“We’re pumped to open the park to everyone from autumn 2024. Due to heavy rainfall that was unfortunately unavoidable during construction, we have experienced delays from when we first hoped to open it to the public ... but it’s just like the saying goes, good things come to those who wait!”
“We know from our Melbourne URBNSURF site, that there is a market and appetite for Australians to come and enjoy a surf session at our parks regardless of where it is.”
