WA Premier opens major community centre in Dalwallinu

Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett has officially opened the Dalwallinu Discovery Centre, coinciding with the Wheatbelt townâs centenary celebrations.
The new centre focusses on three areas: community and performing arts; a community resource centre; and the environment.
The concept of the Dalwallinu Discovery Centre began in 2002 and building started in 2009. The Shire of Dalwallinu provided $1.5million for the project, with a further $1.9million in State Government funding, including $802,000 from Royalties for Regions.
Premier Barnett said the centre had taken some time to develop but would be a central hub not only for Dalwallinu but the surrounding region, stating âthe centre will offer a variety of services and facilities including environmental interpretive displays, visual and performing arts space as well as Government services, education and youth support.
âThe building symbolises so much about the community of Dalwallinu; a community prepared to invest in itself and prepared to be bold and innovative, without compromising on quality.
âI congratulate Dalwallinu on its centenary and with this type of program and development in place, this community has a positive and vibrant future.?
Western Australian Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the centre offered many amenities and would assist in attracting economic, social and tourism benefits, adding âfor some time, Dalwallinu has capitalised on its natural environment advantages - in particular, the unique flora within the shire that attracts tourists to the region every year.
âThe wildflower and interactive displays will attract many visitors to the centre, as well as providing a hub for the community of Dalwallinu.?
Minister Grylls said the buildingâs innovative design enabled harvesting of rain water and a âwaveâ style roof ensured minimum use of heating and cooling throughout the year.
