Athletes welcome reopening of Cairns’ Barlow Park
The newly laid synthetic athletics track at Barlow Park in Cairns was put to the test on Sunday by some of the quickest in North Queensland in a Celebrity 100 metre Dash.
The upgraded international-standard eight-lane synthetic track, also features improved long jump, triple jump and steeplechase facilities.
In addition to a range of fun activities, the Celebrity 100m Dash final featured heat winners and players from Cairns FC and the Northern Pride.
Cairns Regional Council Mayor Bob Manning, who competed in the race, commented “I know many athletes and sports have been eagerly waiting for Barlow Park to re-open so it is fantastic that contractors have been able to complete the resurfacing of the track a few weeks ahead of schedule.
“It will be a big year for Barlow Park events once again in 2018. We have the upcoming NRL pre-season match between the Cowboys and Tigers later this month, but in terms of the athletics track Cairns will host the Queensland Primary School Track and Field Championships in October and then both the Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships and Australian All Schools Knock-out Championships in December.
The Barlow Park resurfacing project cost about $725,000 and involved re-laying 7000 metre² of track surface, incorporating the full 400 metre athletics track, and alterations to the steeplechase and pole vault areas.
