New netball courts open in Darebin
The Darebin Netball Association has welcomed the reopening of three refurbished outdoor courts at the Darebin Community Sports Stadium.
Part of a $9.6 million Victorian Government commitment to build 64 new netball courts across Melbourne’s inner north, the development, along with other new courts in Melbourne, Moreland and Yarra, will meet the needs of 300,000 netball participants across the state.
The new courts at Darebin stadium feature a safer acrylic surface for players, wider run-off areas, more seating and shelter for participants and spectators, and line markings for tennis.
With three competition-ready netball courts planned next door at Reservoir High School, the two sites will soon be able to host big netball events and run training programs.
Victorian Minister for Sport John Eren explained “netball is booming in Victoria, but more court space is needed to accommodate this growth and attract even more Victorians to the court.
“We want more Victorians to play the sport they love, and that means building new netball courts.”
“These are the first of 64 brand new courts we’re building across inner Melbourne – giving more locals of all ages the chance to get on the court when they want, close to home.”
Darebin Netball Association President Julie Zucco added “we’re growing significantly and this is catering for the needs of our clubs.”
“On a Saturday it’ll facilitate bringing in another six teams straight away.”
The project features an asphalt base and Wm Loud's netball acrylic surface, laid by Wm Loud (Aust) Pty Ltd.
