Victorian bathing icon refurbished
The $6 million restoration project of the Geelong Eastern Beach Bathing complex has been completed.
The restoration, which involved the reconstruction of the seawalls and pool area, replacement of the dive tower, stabilisation of the embankment and upgrading the baths' irrigation system has been completed in advance of the upcoming summer season.
Constructed between 1928 and 1939, the Geelong Eastern Beach Bathing complex is the last major enclosed sea bathing facility to be constructed on Port Phillip Bay, and is a focal point for Geelong's outdoor activities.
The complex represents an innovative example of the combination of structural engineering and architecture, incorporating curved sea walls, a circular timber promenade and a concrete children's pool with the promenade and concrete children's swimming pool being unique in Victoria.
The recent refurbishement of the 110 metre2 children's pool included laying the entire swimming pool in Jasba HT circular mosaics. Previously the pool's concrete surface had been painted, but the City of Greater Geelong wanted to take advantage of the non-slip, anti-bacterial features to improve hygiene and reduce surface cleaning efforts.
A pale blue colour scheme that closely matched the previously painted pool surface was approved by the Heritage Council of Victoria along with contrasting steps, seating and ramp edge safety tiles.
Commenting on the completed project, City of Greater Geelong Capital Projects Coordinator Peter Jeffreys explained "we are extremely impressed with the tile supply and installation service provided by Jasba's Australian agents - Ceramic Solutions. They have worked tirelessly during the cooler months to complete the tiling works within the required timeline and with a high quality outcome".
The prestigious appearance of Jasba HT mosaics linked with the durable nature of tiles - providing the City of Geelong with a long lasting asset.
