Vibrant public artworks sought for Cairns Esplanade Dining Precinct

Cairns Regional Council is calling for vibrant public artworks that are ‘Insta-worthy’ to add the final touches for the Cairns Esplanade Dining Precinct.

Council is looking for artists to create two public art pieces for the Esplanade, a third smaller piece for Shield Street Stage 3 and a vinyl wrap to brighten the electricity box in Shields Street.

Expressions of interest are now open for artists from across Australia to put forward concepts that will not only add to the vibrancy of the dining precinct but encourage people to stop, linger and have a photo taken.

Mayor Bob Manning said the new-look dining precinct would offer uninterrupted views from restaurants and cafes over the Esplanade parklands and through to Trinity Inlet.

Mayor Manning notes “the intention of the Esplanade Dining Precinct redevelopment is to create an al fresco dining experience that capitalises on our tropical climate and the causal, laid-back attitude synonymous with the Far North.

“The new public artworks will add to that experience, not only for diners, but other visitors to the Esplanade.”

The Shields Street Stage 3 project and upgrade of the Esplanade Plaza will finalise Council’s vision of a pedestrian-friendly spine that draws visitors and residents from the waterfront through the heart of the CBD.

The third art piece and electricity box wrap will add to the visual connection between Shields Street and the Esplanade.

Artists are being challenged to develop pieces that provide an irresistible backdrop for photos and selfies.

Mayor Manning added “Social media is an amazing platform for people to share their holiday experiences and memories and as a consequence showcase just how amazing Cairns is.

“We hope that these new pieces of public art will become as well photographed as the much-loved Woven Fish in the Lagoon.”

Expressions of interest are open until 10th February with the chosen artworks to be installed by the end of July.

Artists can find more information on Council’s tenders page.
