Queensland Government ends Cairns Global Tourism Hub process
The Queensland Government has ended the Global Tourism Hub process for Cairns which required international tourists as well as a multi-billion-dollar investment from a global investor. .
Queensland Tourism Minister Kate Jones advised “At this time, this is not realistic. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – we won’t commit prime waterfront real estate in Cairns if we can’t be certain that what will be delivered will bring thousands of extra tourists and give the tourism industry a leg up.
“The proposals we received just didn’t cut the mustard and didn’t represent value for the people of Cairns.”
Back in March last year, the Queensland Government shortlisted three entertainment industry companies: Hard Rock International; Reef Casino Joint Venture; and The Star Entertainment Group to develop detailed proposals for the Cairns Global Tourism Hub (GTH).
At the time Queensland Tourism Minister Kate Jones stated "our vision is simple – to create a world-class tourism hub in Tropical North Queensland that attracts more international and domestic tourists, who stay longer and spend more in the region.
“In addition to the tourism benefits, a GTH will transform Cairns - linking the Cruise Ship Terminal, the Cairns Convention Centre and the CBD.
“We’re committed to growing the tourism industry in Tropical North Queensland. A GTH will support upgrades proposed for the convention centre and the dredging proposed for Trinity Inlet.”
Member for Cairns Michael Healy said today’s announcement on ending the process for the Cairns Global Tourism Hub would give local investors the confidence they needed to proceed with other projects.
Healy notes “COVID-19 has had a huge impact on our economy.
“Now we can continue to focus our attention on projects that will further Far North Queensland’s economic recovery.
“I’ll continue to work with the Minister and the local tourism industry to fast-track projects that will create jobs and pump cash back into local businesses.”
