Upgraded Goulburn facilities attract several major sporting events for 2022
Goulburn Mulwaree Council has worked hard over the past five years to upgrade a number of their sporting facilities and as such has attracted several major sporting events for 2022 strengthening the region’s reputation as a premiere sporting destination. Events include the Hockey NSW Indoor State Championships; the Goulburn Invitational – Southern Country Teams Championships Table Tennis Tournament; the annual Goulburn TrackPower Carnival; and the Goulburn Railway Bowling Club’s Annual Rose Tournament.
To kick off the summer of sport, Hockey NSW in partnership with Goulburn Mulwaree Council will host various divisions of the Hockey NSW Indoor State Championships from 7th January – 13th February 2022, at the Goulburn Recreation Area.
General Manager Warwick Bennett advises “Goulburn Mulwaree Council has worked hard over the past five years to upgrade a number of our sporting facilities to a standard which can cater for these high level competitions. The Indoor Hockey Championships are a great example of investment in our sporting calendar, and the benefits that flow on from this to our economy are enormous.”
Over 75 teams from across NSW including Nepean, Bathurst, Dubbo, Illawarra, South Coast, Sydney, Central Coast, Coffs Coast, Southern Highlands and Goulburn will compete.
Over the duration of the Championships, Goulburn will host more than 900 players, as well as coaches, managers and their families.
Teams will compete in the following divisions: Open Men 7th – 9th January, Open Women 14th – 16th January, Under 18 Boys 21st – 23rd January, Under 18 Girls 28th – 30th January, Masters Men 4th – 6th February and Masters Women 11th – 13th February.
This is the second year in a three year agreement between Hockey NSW and Goulburn Mulwaree Council to host the Championships, furthering Goulburn’s reputation as a centre for indoor hockey.
According to Hockey NSW, the Indoor State Championships in Goulburn are expected to bring a total economic value of approximately $3.5 million per year to the region.
Returning after its most successful tournament to date, is the Goulburn Invitational – Southern Country Teams Championships Table Tennis Tournament. Teams from associations all over Southern NSW and ACT will compete in a round-robin, multi-divisional tournament which is expected to attract many top grade players who will use this event to kick start their competitive year.
Goulburn Cycle Club and Cycling NSW will present the annual Goulburn TrackPower Carnival, adding to the already busy calendar. The Carnival will feature Men’s Wheel Race, Women’s Wheel Race, Invitation Roller Derby and NSW Under 17 Madison Championships, as well as a number of junior events.
The Goulburn Railway Bowling Club’s Annual Rose Tournament is expected to attract teams from across NSW, including some of the state’s best lawn bowling competitors. The Rose Tournament has quickly become one of the most prestigious and sought after tournaments in NSW.
Based on Tourism Research Australia’s Sports Tourism Research, these three events are expected to inject a further $300,000 into the local economy.
