University of Sydney undertakes Oval redevelopment

Aiming to improve sporting facilities at its main Camperdown Campus, the University of Sydney is currently undertaking the first stage of the redevelopment of its two main sporting fields.

Work is currently underway on the redevelopment of the University’s No. 2 Oval with the addition of grandstand with undercover seating and associated amenities for up to 1,200 people.

Being undertaken by the University’s Campus Infrastructure and Services (CIS) division, the development also includes high performance gym and warm up area, an indoor activities/cricket training facility and a 300 person function space along with player and referee change rooms; medical facilities for players and a game day canteen.

The redevelopment has been described by Sydney University Soccer Football Club as “the most exciting major project in the clubs history.”

Having played its home games at a succession of grounds in Sydney’s Eastern and Inner West Suburbs over recent year, the No.2 Oval redevelopment will give the Club a home ground, on-campus venue amid the 50,000 strong university community.

The Club adds that the new venue, set to be completed by the end of the year “will be a transformational undertaking and one that stands the Club in good stead to become the one of the most exciting football experiences in Australia.”

The area surrounding the new Grandstand will be fully landscaped and following completion of the construction local roadways will be realigned and converted into a shared pedestrian zone.

The University also has long term plans for its Oval No. 1.

The development proposal for Oval No. 1 upgrades the existing playing surface and addresses the long-term growth of University’s sports culture.

Situated at the lowest point of the campus, Oval No. 1 is prone to flooding during heavy rainfall and is also not large enough for a regulation AFL field.

At the base of the proposal is a series of concrete stormwater tanks with a capacity of 10.5-million litres and a 450-space basement carpark that consolidates campus parking at a centralised location. The playing surface would be lifted 2.5 metres above its current level.

The design would include a modular steel structure with timber bench seating perched above the oval and designed as a staged development.
