Unilumin impresses with naked-eye 3D LED at 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

By Karen Sweaney

A naked-eye 3D LED opening performance presented by Shenzhen-based Unilumin Group - a leading enterprise in the LED industry - at the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship has amazed the audience.

A 3D LED display is a new way to let the viewers enjoy three-dimensional graphics or even videos with their bare eyes, hence the term "naked eye" 3D display. In contrast to 3D films requiring 3D glasses, a naked-eye 3D display screen can provide viewers with a perception of depth without the need for such eyewear.

Unilumin provides LED displays and solutions for control room, broadcast, commercial, retail, entertainment, sports, landscape lighting and many other applications.

The 2023 IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) Ice Hockey Women's World Championship Division I Group A commenced in Shenzhen this week with teams from six countries, including the host China, as well as Denmark, Norway, Austria, Slovakia and the Netherlands, with a total of 350 players are competing in the single round-robin tournament, playing a total of 15 matches over five days.

The opening combined Lingnan architecture, Shenzhen spring bamboo shoots and other symbolic imagery, with Unilumin's creative content team producing a song of ice and fire for the audience using naked-eye 3D LED display, projection and other technology.

Shenzhen made Chinese sporting history as the first city in Southern China to host a top-level international ice hockey tournament. The tournament will be the highest-level international women's ice hockey competition ever held in China after the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Unilumin has previously provided professional products and technology for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, the CBA All-Star Weekend, the 2023 Women's Ice World Championships, among other events.

Based on rich creative experience and independent research of digital content, Unilumin Group now has a professional creative team which can provide innovative content solution production services across the full creative process; from material selection, planning, modelling to rendering and testing.

Unilumin notes “the 3D screen produces 3D images through a combination of traditional flexible LED screen and 3D digital display technology. The human eye gets the visual illusion that the image displayed is 3D when it is, actually, 2D. The eyesight of a human being carries 3D spatial sense. The same principle applies to 3D. With the use of 3D, images are separated and they are sent to the right and to the left of the human eyes.”

3D LED displays are considered to be the future of the advertising industry. They are the epitome of powerful visual communication and are more easily seen by the public. They are also superior to previous forms of advertising, such as billboard ads, posters, and 2D LED lights.

In the future, naked eye 3D LED technology can be used in combination with other 3D technologies to create unique effects. Investing in higher resolution visuals and working with animators and artists to produce engaging 3D content will certainly drive the 3D LED market.

LED screens have been very influential in branding and promotion and they carry a high rate of return on investment (ROI). Similarly, businesses and individuals use LED technology in various settings, and there is no shortage of their adaptation. The use of 3D screen brings more innovation to marketing. This is because of its strong visual aesthetics and an optimal user experience. 3D LED screen will be the next frontier in display technology.
