Ubiquinol supplement can boost physical performance
Ubiquinol can boost the power production of trained athletes, according to a study by the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition*.
The double-blind, placebo-controlled study involved 100 Olympic athletes who received either a placebo or Ubiquinol supplement, a reduced version of Coenzyme Q10.
After six weeks of training, athletes who received Ubiquinol demonstrated higher levels of muscle power compared to those who did not receive the supplement.
Health Schools Australia Principal Stephen Eddey says Ubiquinol supplementation resulted in significantly enhanced physical performance compared to the placebo group.
Eddey explains “the study demonstrated that daily supplementation of 300mg Ubiquinol for six weeks significantly enhanced physical performance measured as maximum power output.
“The increase in power per kilogram of body weight was over 2.5%, which is quite significant for an athlete in peak condition.”
Ubiquinol is the ‘reduced form’ of Coenzyme Q10, is produced naturally in the body and is vital for energy production.
The study said Ubiquinol is safe and healthy for athletes as it supports and increases physical performance and is also beneficial for overall health of the athletes, especially heart health.
Eddey says “additionally, Ubiquinol may specifically benefit the antioxidant status of athletes, which is often compromised by the elevated presence of reactive oxygen species.”
The study also indicated that the results were likely to be broader and Ubiquinol could have benefits for non-elite athletes and those who are physically activity – who the study dubs ‘older athletes’ and ‘weekend warriors’.
Produced naturally within the body, Ubiquinol is CoQ10 that has been reduced to make it more readily usable by the body. It is also one of the most powerful known fat-soluble antioxidants available.
This helps it protect the body’s cells from damage caused by oxidative stress and free radicals. It also has a superior absorption ability.
There are many national brands that make products that contain Ubiquinol. Ask your health practitioner or local pharmacist for the best product for you.
Ubiquinol is produced by the Japan-based Kaneka Corporation which produces diversified products including pharmaceutical intermediates and food supplements.
