TP Aquatic Constructions to install splash pad for Weipa Aquatic Centre

The Weipa Aquatic Centre is undergoing a $1.7 million upgrade and when the facility reopens in November 2024, it will feature a new splash pad.

Weipa is a coastal mining town in the LGA of Weipa Town in Queensland and is one of the largest towns on the Cape York Peninsula.

The new splash pad is part of the facility's upgrade, which is being carried out by TP Aquatic Constructions on behalf of Weipa Town Authority (WTA),

The upgrade will also include several additional enhancements, such as a refurbished plant room and saltwater chlorinator, and an extension of the existing toddler pool.

Installation of new wet deck and plinth tiles around the 25 metre pool will also ensure a safer and more enjoyable swimming experience for all.

The project is being funded by Rio Tinto and WTA Chair Jaime Gane said the inclusion of the splash pad would boost Weipa’s liveability, especially for those with younger children.

Gane noted “these types of facilities are important to foster active and connected communities. Whilst we must always approach investment in community infrastructure responsibly, it’s important that we ensure our community is a desired place to live, work and play.

“Our aquatic centre has continued to be a gathering hub for residents and families, especially on weekends [and] these improvements will make it even a more popular place to visit.

“The project was initiated due to the ageing plant room infrastructure, and we were constantly having to close the wading pool for maintenance due to poor flow and surface deterioration.

“This will reduce our ongoing operational expenses, as salt is far cheaper than chlorine, and it will mean we have a safer and more reliable system.”

The Weipa Aquatic Centre will be temporarily closed from the end of May to November 2024 to facilitate the completion of this project.
