The Y to complete fit-out of Stromlo Leisure Centre ahead of opening
With construction now complete on the ACT’s state-of-the-art $36 million Stromlo Leisure Centre, the new facility has been handed over to YMCA NSW (the Y) to complete the fit-out ahead of opening day on Saturday 15th August 2020.
With sweeping views across Canberra, the Centre will boast a 50-metre pool with moveable bulkhead, warm water program/learn to swim pool, leisure pool, toddlers pool, a splash park with a giant tipping bucket and slides, health club and crèche.
The Y NSW Chief Executive, Susannah Le Bron said membership interest was already strong and added “we are counting down the days to our 15th August opening and cannot wait to share this truly awesome facility with the ACT community.
“We’ve already had more than 1500 people express interest in joining the Y at Stromlo and know Canberrans are just as excited as us to get on top of their health and wellness goals against the beautiful backdrop of the Molonglo Valley.
“Access to the site on the day will be limited to members and casuals with bookings in line with COVID-19 restrictions to ensure everyone can work out and connect in a safe way."
ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation Yvette Berry said the Centre would provide a welcoming destination for Canberrans looking for more ways to get active, relax and learn critical water safety skills.
Minister Berry advised “the Stromlo Leisure Centre offers our community another location to relax with family and friends and will provide ongoing employment opportunities and aquatic programs to keep our community active and safe in the water.
“The construction of the Stromlo Leisure Centre was undertaken by more than 80 local and interstate contractors and over 1,100 personnel, while more than 80 jobs have been created for the ongoing operation of the Centre.
“We are committed to delivering better infrastructure for our community and Canberrans will be able to enjoy this facility for generations to come.
“The ACT Government is happy to continue its relationship with YMCA NSW through their management of the Stromlo Leisure Centre, as it continues to provide important services to Canberrans across the ACT.”
The Y manages Lakeside Leisure Centre, Gungahlin Leisure Centre and the Canberra Olympic Pool on behalf of the ACT Government.
YMCA NSW and the ACT Government will officially open the centre on Saturday, 15th August 2020.
