YMCA NSW to operate new Stromlo Leisure Centre

The new Stromlo Leisure Centre in Canberra’s south is on track to be completed in mid-2020.

Canberra’s newest public swimming complex, the Stromlo Leisure Centre, is one step closer to opening following the appointment of YMCA NSW as its operator.

YMCA NSW was the successful tenderer during a competitive process. It is already the operator for the Gungahlin Leisure Centre, Lakeside Leisure Centre and Canberra Olympic Pool.

More than 100,000 Canberrans in Weston Creek, Woden and the Molonglo Valley will be served by the facility.

The new development will include: an eight-lane 50-metre competition pool capable of being split into 2 x 25-metre short course swimming pools; a program pool for activities like swimming lessons and aqua aerobics; a leisure pool; a toddlers’ pool; gym; splash park; creche and a kiosk/cafe.

The Centre will cater for some types of aquatic based hydrotherapy and gentle exercise offerings. It will include disability access with a beach entry (zero depth), which enables a wheelchair to be pushed all the way into the pool.

The $36.5 million facility is part of the Stromlo Forest Park Master Plan, which is already seeing this beautiful part of Canberra become a thriving sport and recreation precinct.

It will build on the range of other facilities and activities available to Canberrans at Stromlo Forest, such as our world-class mountain bike trails, cycling circuit, running tracks, equestrian trails and the relocated container village from West Basin.

Extensive community consultation was a major part in shaping the new Centre. It will be a great place for the community to get together with friends and family, get active and take part in a range of fun and social activities.

ACT Property Group will work with Transport Canberra over the coming months to arrange public transport to service the Stromlo Leisure Centre.
