The Maze's Outback Splash! draws in the crowds

Since opening its new 'Outback Splash!' children's aquatic playground before Christmas, attendance levels at Western Australia's The Maze Family Fun Park have been way been beyond management's expectations, prompting plans to accelerate future development of the attraction.

More than 10,000 people visited The Maze in the first fortnight that the new attraction was open, including 1,200 in a single day.

The Maze co-owner Phil Dixon explained that work was continuing toward the next stage of the attraction's plans to develop the $70 million waterpark in six stages over a 10 year period.

Beyond the opening of the Outback Splash!, subsequent stages will nine waterslides, a lazy river and food and beverage outlets.

However, Dixon feels that the development may need to be enlarged, telling newspaper The Advocate "we are working through the early stages of planning for the second stage now and, given how popular the first stage has been, we may have to change our initial plans and go bigger.

"Some of the things we will work on straight away while planning for the next stage include a bitumen car park, a new admissions building and a new 'dark and scary' maze."

The Outback Splash is a three-storey-high children's aquatic playground with two tube slides, two flume slides, toddlers' slides, a 1,000-litre tipping bucket and a range of water cannons and interactive play. The structure is an Arihant '12a' aquatic play structure, with a Mexican theme, provided by Arihant distributor Amusement Leisure Consultants.

The Maze has also had to employ more than 35 extra staff members over the holiday season to cater for the visitor influx.

Soaring temperatures, Australia's ongoing love of water and nationwide media interest in the new Wet'n'Wild Sydney waterpark have focussed massive attention on the nations waterparks during the current holiday season, with aquatic facilities and waterparks attracting record visitor numbers.
