Tasmanian clubs combine in Devonport Country Club redevelopment

Looking to overcome financial and membership challenges, three Tasmanian sport clubs have come together for a major redevelopment at the Devonport Golf Club at Spreyton.

The Devonport Bowls and Croquet Club, Devonport Golf Club and Spreyton Bowls Club will become the Devonport Country Club when the clubs break ground on a combined redevelopment of the golf course this spring.

Local State MP Roger Jaensch said it was “most impressive” that the three clubs had been able to co-ordinate the upgrade together to improve their facilities, stating “this is leadership that the rest of Tasmania should look at.”

The current plan is to build a new clubhouse over two levels with a club bar, bistro and function centre.

The plans include a new state of the art indoor bowls centre which would allow bowling club members to bowl all through the year.

Two croquet lawns, three outdoor bowling greens and upgrades to the golf course will also be part of the $8.5 million redevelopment.

The project received $3.5 million from the federal government in June last year and a further $3.5 million investment in the recent 2017/18 Tasmanian budget.

The Devonport Country Club estimates the project would create 100 full time jobs during construction then 22 ongoing jobs once built.

It hoped to attract national competitions at the new facilities and to encourage local residents to take up sport.
