Frankston Regional Aquatic Centre on track for 2014 opening

One year since major works commenced, the $49.7 million Frankston Regional Aquatic Centre is on track to open in 2014.

As part of a site visit to inspect construction works, Victorian Minister for Sport and Recreation Hugh Delahunty joined representatives from Frankston City Council to inspect construction and mark significant progress for the project that will deliver far-ranging benefits to Victoria.

Minister Delahunty stated "it has been one year since major works started on the Frankston Regional Aquatic Centre and you can really see it starting to take shape.

"The Victorian Coalition Government's $12.5 million investment in the project will ensure the delivery of a high quality, accessible aquatic and recreation facility that will have something for everyone.

"Aquatic facilities play an important role in bringing people together to boost their health through activities like swimming, exercising, learning important water safety skills, recovering from injuries, relaxing, and recuperating.

"The delivery of this project is part of our plan to build more sustainable facilities that make a difference to local communities."

The centre is expected to benefit not only Frankston, but also the Mornington Peninsula region with the inclusion of a family slide complex with two unique world-class water slides the Aquasphere and the Constrictor and an interactive aquatic playground for young children. Additional features of the centre include:

• A heated indoor Olympic-size 50 metre swimming pool;

• Dedicated children's and leisure pools with beach entry;

• A warm water exercise pool, spa, sauna and steam room;

• A gymnasium equipped with the latest fitness technology;

• A café, retail space and crèche; and

• A health and wellness centre.

Minister Delahunty added "the Frankston Regional Aquatic Centre will be a vibrant, innovative space that is expected to draw crowds from the region

"Not only will it be a training ground for people of all fitness levels, it will be a fun family outing for the local and wider community.

"We are continuing to invest in infrastructure that enables a variety of recreation activities and is a valuable community asset."

Minister Delahunty thanked the Frankston City Council for its management of the project and contribution of $23.7 million and the Federal Government for its contribution of $13.5 million towards the project.

He concluded "this has been a team effort and we are all looking forward to seeing this important project come to fruition.

"I encourage everyone in the Frankston region to take advantage of all the new health and sporting options available at the new centre once it is up and running in 2014."
