Gumil Campground upgraded at Gregory National Park

The Northern Territory Government has invested $1 million in the redevelopment of Gumil Campground at Gregory National Park.

Located a few hours west of Katherine on the Victoria Highway, Gregory National Park is the Northern Territory’s largest park, offering camping, fishing and four-wheel driving recreational activities.

Gumil Campground features two lookouts with spectacular views over some of the Territory’s most valuable natural and cultural landscapes.

Gumil Lookout and Campground is 27 km east of the Victoria River Roadhouse, accessible by a steep 4WD track, and now open throughout the dry season for camping.

Traditional Owners of the Park celebrated the official opening of the campground, which offers 16 unpowered sites, an amenities block, and access to wood fired BBQ’s. Visitors will need to be fully self-sufficient and provide their own water supplies.

Last year the Park attracted almost 50,000 visitors, offering a number of 4WD tracks for suitably prepared visitors to explore.

The Park can be reached via the Victoria Highway from Katherine and Kununurra, or via the unsealed Buntine and Buchanan highways.

Local Territory business Katherine Constructions undertook the campground upgrades, with eight locals working in the construction phase of the project.

The Traditional Owners have welcomed visitors to their country and shared their culture for decades. Gregory National Park is jointly managed by Traditional Owners and the Northern Territory Government, working together to protect the diverse flora and fauna in the Park.

The NT Government has completed major upgrades to nine Territory Parks, including six new camp grounds, eight walking trails, lookouts and amenities.
