New local national parks management plan adopted for NSW Mid North Coast

Kempsey Shire Council has advised that a newly adopted management plan for Goolawah National Park, Goolawah Regional Park, and Limeburners Creek National Park marks a major step towards sustainable conservation and recreational use along the picturesque NSW Mid North Coast.

Announced by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service on 6th March 2024, the plan aims to preserve the scenic beauty, rich cultural heritage, and biodiversity of these coastal parks nestled between Port Macquarie and Crescent Head.

Central to the plan is the $1.65 million revitalisation of the Point Plomer Precinct, a response to the challenges posed by increasing visitor numbers and the resulting wear on the environment. This project will enhance the campground while maintaining its original character, introducing improvements such as better drainage, and leveling of campsites, safer access roads, and a new information office.

Increased parking for day visitors, new seating and picnic areas, and stronger protection of cultural heritage sites will also be delivered. (The campground will be closed from the 1st August – 15th December 2024 for works to occur.)

The plan also outlines a series of actions aimed at conserving biodiversity, including the management of invasive species, ecological burning programs, and the protection of threatened species.

It was developed following extensive public consultation, with 149 submissions received.

The new management plan sets out to not only protect the parks' natural and cultural sites but also to make sure they can be enjoyed by future generations.
