Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway revamped, rebranded and relaunched
Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway has been rebranded and relaunched as the Sydney Motorsport Park.
The re-branding exercise follows a $12 million transformation of Sydney's only motorsport venue that includes new race circuits, upgraded pit facilities and a doubling of its capacity.
The redevelopment is the result of a joint venture between the NSW Government and venue managers the Australian Racing Drivers' Club (ARDC).
Reaunching the facility, NSW Minister for Sport and Recreation, Graham Annesley, said the rebranding reflected a substantial commitment by the NSW Government to the sport of motor racing, stating "the NSW Government congratulates Chief Executive Glenn Matthews and his Board on their outstanding work in upgrading the circuit. The new layout offers drivers a real test."
Upgrades at the circuit have delivered four individual track configurations including the original 3.9 kilometre GP circuit, a new 4.5 kilometre Long Circuit (featuring a 830-metre extension), 2.8 kilometre North Circuit GP layout and 1.9 kilometre South Circuit GP track.
Both North and South GP layouts can be utilised simultaneously increasing not only the flexibility but the capacity of the revamped facility.
The Long Circuit is a combination of the GP track and South GP extension, combining all of Sydney Motorsport Park's best features.
While the tracks now provide new challenges for competitors, spectators can also enjoy new vantage points.
Apart from the changes to the track that have been undertaken, extensive work has started in the pit lane including with the existing garages as well as a brand new pit complex under construction near turns four and five that will allow two race meetings to run at the same time. A substantial upgrade of the hospitality suites is planned.
ARDC Chief Executive Glenn Matthews said that the name change was the next important phase of the transformation plan and positioned the facility as a truly international operation.
Matthews explained "Sydney Motorsport Park is unique in Sydney, and indeed NSW. It is the only permanent racetrack in the Sydney basin and these changes have been made to better service the sport."
Sydney Motorsport Park remains the only motorsport facility in the entire Sydney basin after the closure of Amaroo Park in 1998 and Oran Park in 2010.
