Sydney continues to head Australian tourism visitation
Almost 32.5 million people visited Sydney in 2013/14, a rise of 11.4% on the previous year.
The rate of increase in international and domestic visitor numbers to Sydney is more than twice that of most other domestic destinations.
By contrast, new data from Tourism Research Australia shows that many other Australian capital cities and tourist locations recorded falls in visitors in the year to 30th June 2014.
2013/14 saw the Gold Coast attract 800,000 fewer visitors, visitation to Tropical North Queensland dip by 600,000, while Melbourne shed 405,000 visitors, Hobart 213,000, Canberra 92,000 and Brisbane 69,000.
The regions also took a hit, with the Central Coast in NSW losing 451,000 visitors and the Lakes in Victoria shedding 213,000.
Perth, Adelaide and Darwin along with the Barossa, Eyre Peninsula and Kakadu regions all saw improved numbers.
