Leigh Harry to head Tourism Victoria
Leigh Harry, Chief Executive of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), has been appointed the new Chief Executive of Tourism Victoria.
Announcing the appointment, Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher MP explained that Leigh's experience in driving the international success of the MCEC would be valuable in taking Tourism Victoria to the next stage.
Minister Asher stated "Leigh has overseen the development of the MCEC into a world-class convention and exhibition centre from the time it was a building site in 1989 to today when it has become one of the world's leading convention and exhibition destinations."
Harry is known as an international leader not only for his work at the MCEC but also for his work as International President of both the Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC) and as President of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) from 2006 to 2010.
"Leigh has also been a national leader having held or currently holding positions including Deputy Chairman of the Melbourne Convention and Visitors Bureau (MCVB), Chairman of the Business Events Council of Australia (BECA), President of the Meetings and Events Association of Australia (MEAA) and as a member of the Tourism Australia Business Events Industry Advisory Panel.
"Tourism is a crucial Victorian industry and Mr Harry's experience will be invaluable in the years ahead."
The Minister added that "tourism is a $15.2 billion industry for Victoria (and) I am confident (he) will build on the success of Tourism Victoria."
The appointment has been welcomed by Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) Chief Executive John Lee who highlighted Harry's wealth of invaluable experience.
Lee explained "Leigh Harry has been instrumental in driving business events growth in Victoria over many years.
"He successfully prosecuted the case for significant government investment in new conference and convention facilities in Melbourne which has helped to drive growth in visitors to Victoria.
"This has not only created considerable additional economic activity in Victoria, supporting jobs growth, it has also fostered associated private sector investment in hotels and other business events facilities.
"This supply side approach to tourism is crucial for the future development of Australian tourism, as detailed in the National Long-Term Tourism Strategy, so having Mr Harry at the helm of Tourism Victoria will ensure the necessary ongoing focus on tourism infrastructure.
"His direct involvement in executing the long-term strategy to grow tourism in Victoria stands him in good stead to lead Tourism Victoria and to ensure the state's strong track record continues."
Harry is expected to commence his new role in October.
