Swimming Australia appoints Anna Johnson to drive Paralympic Program
Swimming Australia has appointed internationally experienced and respected administrator Anna Johnson to its High Performance Leadership team. Johnson joins Swimming Australia in the role of General Manager – Paralympic Program.
With more than 15 years of senior experience in the sporting sector, Johnson has a proven track record in major Games delivery, team operations and supporting athlete preparation, as well as fostering strategic relationships with provincial and national partners, and international host organising committees.
Most importantly, she is deeply passionate about the Paralympic sport movement having spent eight years in roles across both the British Paralympic Association and Canadian Paralympic Committee.
Swimming Australia’s High Performance Director, Tamara Sheppard, believes Johnson’s passion and experience will continue to drive high standards for the successful Paralympic program.
Sheppard notes “the trajectory of this team is undeniable following their successes in both Tokyo and then Madeira last year at the Para World Championships, so I have no doubt someone with Anna’s knowledge will ensure the right systems and resources surround the team to continue that trajectory toward Paris.
“We were not only impressed by her previous record, but also her obvious desire to lead collaboratively and support those around her learn and develop. These qualities, combined with her passion for Paralympic sport, will undoubtedly push this team to perform when it matters most.
“Anna’s commitment to building effective relationships, alongside her vast international Paralympic experience will be an asset to this program on the path to the Paris Games, and beyond.”
Johnson said she was grateful for the opportunity to work and learn with such a world class team and shared “the Australian Dolphins have been inspiring to watch and I’m looking forward to applying my passion and supporting the team to build on their tremendous success as they head towards Paris 2024.
“It is an exciting time for sport in Australia as hosts of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, and the Olympic and Paralympic Games set for Brisbane in 2032. These are not only opportunities to inspire a Nation by how they win, but also an opportunity to continue to remove barriers in the system and build more accessible and inclusive pathways for swimmers with a disability.
“My goal is to create an environment where the athletes, coaches and staff feel united and have the courage to challenge themselves and the team to create the best possible opportunities for excellence through Paris 2024 and beyond. “
