Four Gold Coast aquatic venues co-host Swimming Australia’s annual National Event Camp
Four Gold Coast aquatic venues - the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, Miami Aquatic Centre and Griffith and Bond Universities – are hosting Swimming Australia’s 2023 National Event Camp which runs from 5th -11th February.
90 of the country’s leading swimmers will gather on the Gold Coast for the annual National Event Camp supported by the City of Gold Coast.
A combination of current Australian Dolphins, and the next generation of stars, will complete a gruelling week long training block with Australian Dolphins Head Coach, Rohan Taylor, noting the camp provides an opportunity to re-establish standards and continue to drive the team’s performance ahead of a busy 18 months of competition, culminating in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Taylor shared “our athletes relish the opportunity to come together at the beginning of every year and reset, driving themselves, and each other, to the level of performance that continues to place us at the very top of international swimming.
“We surround them with the country’s best coaches and support staff, including physios, strength and conditioning, physiologists and performance analysts to ensure they draw as much information as they can from this week to take home to the daily performance environment and target team selection.
“It’s not just about what happens in the water though, the work we do on culture and education is just as important as we continue to contribute to the rich legacy of this Dolphins team.
“Whether it’s your first event camp, or you’ve been to more than you can remember, it’s a valuable experience for each and every athlete and we are fortunate to have the support of the City of Gold Coast to deliver it in such an environment.”
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate welcomed the Dolphins’ visit and enthused “It’s thrilling to have the Dolphins here in our city as they set their sights on Paris 2024.
“I have fantastic memories of the Pan Pacs being hosted here in 2014 with legends like Michael Phelps, Emily Seebohm and Cate Campbell all on the pool deck. We backed that with an incredible Commonwealth Games four years later.”
“This camp reinforces that we have the capacity, and facilities, to play our role in the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics. The Gold Coast is the place to be.’’
A targeted group of athletes will also attend a two-day relay camp on the coast ahead of National Event Camp, as the Dolphins continue to work on maintaining their status as the premier relay nation in international swimming.
