Surf Ryder simulator opens at Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre

Australia's third LatiTube standing surf wave simulator has opened at the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre (RALC) in suburban Sydney.

The $3.5 million project has made the RALC the first community aquatic centre in NSW to offer the thrill of riding a surfboard all year.

Branded as the SurfRyder, the LatiTube's wave simulation technology provides waves that can be adjusted to suit riders of all abilities and can form a range of wave shapes and heights, from a two metre tube to a 60 cm roller.

Water from a 90,000 litre holding tank is pushed through the riding surface from two, 132kW pumps to create the wave, with water temperature at a constant 29C.

The simulator, which can take up to 48 riders an hour, costs $17.50 for half-an-hour of riding, which includes pool entry.

The attraction was funded by reserves held by RALC, which is one of a handful of Council-owned and operated pools to deliver a surplus.

Developed by Coffs Harbour-based Swimplex Aquatics and inventor Steve Kriticos, the LatiTube captures the rush, velocity and intensity of a barrelling wave.

Unlike other simulators and wave pools, the Latitube pumps water over a flexible 20mm mat known as 'the curtain ride surface', which is similar in feel to a backyard trampoline.
