Subiaco’s Regal Theatre to get major upgrade
The landmark Regal Theatre in the Perth suburb of Subiaco will close over Christmas and late next year for the first restorations in its 76-year history.
The two-stage upgrade and restoration program is being backed buy a $1.5 million grant from Lotterywest.
Regal Theatre Foundation Chairman and former Subiaco Mayor Richard Diggins told Perth newspaper the Western Suburbs Weekly “(the) first stage will be works on the balcony upstairs, adding strength to the structural attachment and replacing the western staircase with a fireproof steel structure.
“The entire roof will also be replaced, which will eliminate a major issue during winter when patrons have an unexpected shower from time to time.
“Stage two will commence late 2015 and see the installation of new seats, major works to the auditorium, electrical upgrades and painting the theatre - to closely match its original colour scheme.”
Opened as a cinema in 1938, the theatre was named after the then recently crowned King George VI.
In 1976, the venue was transformed into a performing arts venue and is now recognised as on of Western Australia's major venues having presented more than 400 shows, artists and acts.
Now administered by the Regal Theatre Foundation, the Regal was placed on Western Australia's heritage list of buildings in 1994. It is listed with the National Trust and is registered with the Australian Heritage Commission.
